History of Morzine

Deep in a small valley whose gentle curves stretch as far as the Swiss frontier, Morzine is a village which is keen to preserve its gentle pace of life and authentic Savoyard charm. Right in the heart of the Portes du Soleil, it is an ideal point from which to set out and discover a wealth of alpine possibilities.

It is rumoured that Morzine only became a tourist attraction as a result of the influence diplomats based in Geneva who fell under the spell of the village. The "Grand Hotel", which was the first establishment built to welcome tourists in the 1920's, and its proprietor François Baud took the village into a new era.

Morzine is originally a working farming and slate mining community, rich in heritage and not just a purpose-built ski resort. It is for this reason that Morzine is full of tradition, artisanal craft and history as well as being a modern, lively winter sports destination.
